Reunion 2018

66 Years to the day

The 29 April1952 saw the formation of the 71st Entry. 29 April 2018 saw 10 members of the 71st Entry, with their partners, sitting in the salubrious surroundings of the Branston Hall Hotel celebrating at their ‘Gala’ dinner.

Our programme started with the ‘Meet & Greet’ on Friday afternoon followed by dinner being served in a private room. This room was set aside for the exclusive use of the 71st entry throughout the weekend; even breakfast was served in there.

Our Saturday outing took us just three miles from our hotel to the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC).

One of our members, Peter Cunningham, is an
accredited guide for the IBCC and on our arrival
he briefed us on the history of the centre and outlined
some details of the tour we would be taking during
our visit. In spite of being relatively new, the outside
surrounds are becoming nicely established with the inside
areas performing well. The internal exhibition hall is
certainly not to be missed. The visual presentation and
displays can only be described as exceptional, very
informative and quite moving for anyone who may have
lost someone in Bomber Command.( See photos in the
attached gallery).

The entry had decided to give a donation to the IBCC
which was gratefully received by a member of the IBCC staff.

Sunday was left free for members to choose how they spent the
day. No problem there; if you wanted to be out and about, there
are plenty of tourist attractions in the Lincoln area, many of them
reflecting the RAF presence during the war.

After a full day we retuned to the hotel and prepared
ourselves for the excellent Gala dinner which was
served at 19.00hrs.
As usual, discussions led to a future reunion and
location; Lincolnwas a strong contender. Farewells
were made after breakfast on Monday and
everyone agreed the reunion had been a great success.

PS By coincidence the RAF Hemswell association were holding their annual ‘Get Together’ at Branston Hall. This association is open to anyone who spent time at RAF Hemswell and gave a chance for 2 of our members to introduce themselves.
